Being in a rut…
After starting your business you think, let’s get to work! So you invest, invest, and invest. Most of that investment is money. The other half is time. Then the waiting period happens. You wait for an email, a text message, a phone call… but nothing happens! Maybe one booking for that month, then three for the next, but also two cancellations.
Yes, this happens in EVERY business! First things first, for every booking, make you sure you have a contract, in the contract a booking fee or deposit fee, and a returned signed contract from the client. So that in the event that the client does cancel close to the session booked, that booking fee is non-refundable! That goes for any business. Why? Because it says so in the contract! This guarantees that your time wasn’t wasted. Trust me, this is essential.
The reason I’m talking about things like this is because I’ve learned the hard way. Which is fine because the point of the matter is, I learned! So, being in a place where you haven’t had that many clients doesn’t mean it’s time to give up. This actually means it’s time be proactive and creative.
This leads me to my second point: stay active! Read articles, books, take a free course (YouTube), take pictures of family members or friends, do something, anything! Don’t become lazy. People aren’t booking you because you’re not good or because of anything to do with you… It’s just part of life. There are seasons in life and some are longer than others.
One thing I like to do is offer mini sessions. Sometimes it’s a success and I have ten sessions in one day, other times I only have one session, either way, I count it as a victory. Whenever I put myself out there and try something daring, I’m really proud of myself and I make sure to tell myself that! Trying and failing is better than never trying and never knowing “what could have” been. Remember that next time you get intimidated in trying something new.
Last point, make sure to pour into yourself. You deserve any “win” you can get. Even if it’s a small win like I said before, it’s a win, be proud of yourself. Know that there is someone out there looking for your type of style. Your talent is needed in this world. Being normal and the same as everyone else is boring. It is a very competitive world out there, but there is also a very loving, supportive world too. Make sure to seek that community and stick with them!
